⚔ Act I — The Mists of Ogham Levels 1–18

🗺️ Act Overview

You begin as a shipwrecked exile in the fog-choked forests of Clearfell. The land reeks of corruption — diseased wildlife, rotting undead, and druidic rituals gone wrong. Your job: survive, build your kit, and reach Ogham Manor to end whatever horror lurks there.

Entry level: 1  |  Exit level target: ~18–20

🔑
SSF Gear Watch — Act 1 Prioritise a physical or cold crossbow — even a magic one beats a white one. Keep Life rolls on every piece. Cold resistance is your main resist to stack early; you'll get +10% Cold Res from Beira's quest reward.

💡
Did You Know? — Shark Fin Quest Reward The Shark Fin Tattoo quest rewards Evasion in 0.5 RotA. Take it — Evasion is a core defensive layer for this build, especially useful before you get Sorcery Ward much later.

🔄 Weapon Swap Setup — Do This First DONE ✓

This build lives on weapon swapping. Set it up the moment you have both Permafrost Bolts and Fragmentation Rounds equipped — usually within the first 30 minutes of Act 1.

  1. On your crossbow, right-click near the lock icon (top-left of the crossbow icon in your inventory). This locks the crossbow to both weapon sets so one crossbow serves as both.
  2. In your Skill bar, select Permafrost Bolts and assign it to Weapon Set 1 (Red Line). This links it to the red weapon-swap passive tree nodes.
  3. Select Fragmentation Rounds and assign it to Weapon Set 2 (Green Line). This links it to the green nodes.
  4. (Optional but recommended) Bind Permafrost Bolts to Left Click — load it, then swap to Crossbow Shot. Do the same on Right Click with Fragmentation Rounds. This bypasses the swap keybind entirely and lets you fire each with one click.
  5. Add Load buttons for both skills to your hotbar — if you die or swap weapons you can click these to re-load immediately.
💡
Spirit Gems Per Weapon Set (as you unlock them): Set 1: Permafrost Bolts · Herald of Ice · Eternal Rage (later)
Set 2: Fragmentation Rounds · Shard Scavenger · Freezing Mark · Thunderstorm (Act 3+) · Eternal Rage · Berserk (later)

📍 Zone-by-Zone Checklist

  • Clearfell
Starting zone. Grab the waypoint. Kill Beira — she drops a quest reward. Take +10% Cold Resistance. ⚔️ Beira of the Rotten Pack
  • Hunting Grounds
Dense mobs — great XP. Crowbell boss gives Two Weapon Set Passive Skill Points — do not skip. ⚔️ The Crowbell
  • Grelwood
Transition zone. Watch for dangerous packs of Grelwood Wolves — they leap and stun. Stay mobile, kite back.
  • Clearfell Encampment (Town)
Buy support gems from the vendor here. Check for Weapon Elemental Damage, Ice Bite — these are your first support priorities.
  • Freythorn
Corrupted druidic area. Boss gives +30 Spirit — critical for Herald of Ice. ⚔️ The King in the Mists
  • Ogham Farmlands
Una's Hut — Two Weapon Set Passive Skill Points reward. The farms have dense undead — good freeze practice. Watch for Volatile Undeads (they explode).
  • Ogham Village
Waypoint here. Stock up on Life flasks and check vendor for a better crossbow base before the manor.
  • Ogham Manor — Candlemass
Act 1 climax boss. Get Life to ~400–500 before attempting. Freezing Mark is your friend here. ⚔️ Candlemass, the Living Rite

🔑
Gem Priority Order: Weapon Elemental Damage → Concentrated Effect → Increased AoE → Ice Bite → Weapon Elemental Damage (second copy). Get all of these before leaving Act 1 if possible.
💡
Why Frost Bomb? Frost Bomb applies Cold Exposure (reduces enemy cold resistance). It's a utility skill — drop it before engaging packs or on bosses to dramatically increase your freeze buildup speed.
Pro Tip — Shard Scavenger Unlock Once you get enough Spirit, equip Shard Scavenger on Weapon Set 2. When Fragmentation Rounds consumes a Freeze, you get 6 seconds of free Permafrost Bolts firing. This is your primary DPS loop.

⚠️ For exact per-act gem setups, download each act's Build Variant from Mobalytics into your in-game Planner (Acts 1, 2, 3, 4 are separate downloads).

🌲 Passive Tree Priorities — Act 1

  1. Projectile Speed nodes — Top priority. Permafrost Bolts is shotgun-spread without these; you need to be dangerously close to land multiple bolts. Get these ASAP.
  2. Life clusters — Grab any nodes that bring you to 400+ Life by Candlemass.
  3. Crossbow / Projectile Damage nodes — Near your starting area. Passive freeze buildup scales with damage.
  4. Weapon Set Passive Points — You'll get 4 from quests this act (Crowbell × 2, Una's Hut × 2). Allocate them to both weapon set trees.
🔑
Use the In-Game Planner — Download the Act 1 build variant from Mobalytics. It marks every node. Use this as your reference, not the passive screen alone.

🛡️ Gear Checkpoints — Act 1

~400–500 Lifebefore Candlemass
🏹 Crossbow
  • High Physical Damage base — it converts to cold
  • Around level 20: hunt for a Dyad Crossbow — adds an extra bolt to both Permafrost Bolts and Frag Rounds
  • Multi-elemental crossbows work; remove Cold Attunement support if using one
⚗️ Flask Setup
  • Life Flask (medium+) — keep upgraded
  • Mana Flask if struggling with mana
  • Sapphire Charm (cold resistance) if you have a slot
🔮 Key Affixes to Find (SSF)
  • +# maximum Life (on any slot)
  • Cold / Elemental Resistance
  • Increased Physical or Cold Damage (crossbow/rings)
📝 Equipment Slot Priority
  • 1st: Crossbow upgrade
  • 2nd: Helm (Life)
  • 3rd: Rings (Res + Life)
  • 4th: Body Armour (Life)

⚔️ Boss Strategies — Act 1

GENERAL BOSS APPROACH (all Act 1 bosses)
  • Pre-fight: Drop Frost Bomb to apply Cold Exposure (reduces cold res). Switch to Weapon Set 2 and use Freezing Mark once available.
  • Phase 1: Stay at max range. Fire Permafrost Bolts into the boss — aim to stack freeze buildup fast. Projectile Speed is critical here.
  • On Freeze: Immediately switch to Weapon Set 2, fire Fragmentation Rounds to detonate the freeze. This triggers Shard Scavenger — 6 seconds free Permafrost Bolts, no reload.
  • Shard Scavenger Window: Dump Permafrost Bolts freely. Freeze again. Repeat.
  • Positioning: Always be moving. This is a ranged build — never stand still. Strafe in circles, keeping distance.
  • Flask usage: Pop Life Flask when you drop below 60% Life, not at 20%.
CANDLEMASS, THE LIVING RITE — Act 1 Final
  • This boss uses ritual mechanics — dodge the ground AoE circles. Stay mobile.
  • Apply Freezing Mark immediately upon entering. Freeze threshold is achievable in 2–3 Permafrost Bolt volleys.
  • Watch for add spawns — use Permafrost Bolts to freeze/shatter adds, triggering Herald of Ice for AoE chain kills.
  • Common death: standing in ritual circles. Watch your feet, not just the boss.
🧊
Freeze Check — Bosses Freezing Mark sets the boss to 70% freeze threshold — meaning your next volley freezes them much faster. Never fight an Act 1 boss without Freezing Mark active.

⚠️ Common Mistakes — Act 1

  • Skipping Projectile Speed nodes — Permafrost Bolts becomes nearly melee range without them. Die to this constantly.
  • Forgetting Freezing Mark on bosses — cuts your effective freeze speed in half.
  • Not configuring weapon swap early — you'll be manually switching and fumbling through fights.
  • Using Fragmentation Rounds for trash clear — it's your boss detonator and Shard Scavenger trigger. Save it for Rares and bosses.
  • Dying on low Life flask usage — pop flasks early and often, not when nearly dead.
  • Skipping the Frost Bomb before bosses — Cold Exposure is free damage.
  • Missing the Weapon Set Passive Skill Points from The Crowbell and Una's Hut — these unlock both weapon set trees.

✅ End-of-Act 1 Checklist

  • Gem setup matches guide — Frag Rounds, Herald of Ice, Permafrost Bolts, Frost Bomb all socketed with supports
  • Weapon swap configured — Set 1 = Permafrost Bolts (Red) / Set 2 = Fragmentation Rounds (Green)
  • Life at ~500+
  • Flask setup updated — Life Flask upgraded to Act 1 level range
  • Quest rewards collected: +10% Cold Res (Beira) · 2× Weapon Set Points (Crowbell) · +30 Spirit (King in the Mists) · 2× Weapon Set Points (Una's Hut) · +20 Max Life (Candlemass)
  • Passive tree on track — Projectile Speed nodes grabbed, Life clusters allocated, Weapon Set nodes spent
  • Dyad Crossbow acquired or actively hunting for one (~level 20)
  • Herald of Ice active — confirms Spirit is available
🎁 KEY QUEST REWARD CHOICES — ACT 1
Cold Resistance (Beira)
Take +10% Cold Resistance — no choice needed, this is the only meaningful option early.

⚔ Act II — The Wastes of Keth Levels 18–34

🏆 FIRST ASCENDANCY — Do Not Miss This

Pick TACTICIAN — NOT Witchhunter.
Take Supporting Fire first. It will literally delete entire screens of enemies. Then later grab Suppressing Fire to help freeze build up faster. You respec to Witchhunter in endgame — Tactician is the correct leveling ascendancy.

🗺️ Act Overview

Act 2 takes you through ancient ruins and arid wastes — Keth, the Valley of the Titans, and the great city of Deshar. The environment shifts from fog-choked forests to open, sun-baked ruins. You'll encounter heavier armoured enemies — freeze them first.

Entry level: ~18  |  Exit level target: ~33–35

🔑
SSF Gear Watch — Act 2 By now you want 600–800 Life. Upgrade your crossbow if anything better dropped — physical base with cold or elemental damage. Check vendors in each town for support gem upgrades.

📍 Zone-by-Zone Checklist

  • Keth
First zone of Act 2. Kabala, Constrictor Queen boss gives Two Weapon Set Passive Skill Points. Dense snake-type enemies — freeze packs for Herald of Ice chain clears. ⚔️ Kabala, Constrictor Queen
  • Valley of the Titans
Medallion quest reward: +1 Charm Slot + 30% Charm Duration. Titan-type enemies hit hard — keep max range, kite. ⚔️ Medallion Boss
  • Deshar
Town hub. Check vendors for gem upgrades (Freezing Mark may be available here). The "Final Letter" boss gives Two Weapon Set Passive Skill Points. ⚔️ Final Letter
  • The Spires of Deshar
Act 2 climax. Sisters of Garukhan — dual-boss fight. +10% Lightning Resistance reward. Bring upgraded Life flask. ⚔️ Sisters of Garukhan (Act 2 Final Boss)

🔑
Supporting Fire is Tactician-exclusive If you picked Witchhunter instead (not recommended for leveling), you won't have this skill. Pohx says he leveled Tactician the entire campaign — Supporting Fire deletes screens of enemies and makes Act 2 significantly easier.
💡
Did You Know? — Freezing Mark comes in Act 3 Freezing Mark is not in the Act 2 build — you don't have it yet. Bosses in Act 2 are frozen the hard way: raw Permafrost Bolts pressure. Supporting Fire helps enormously with freeze buildup on tough enemies.

🌲 Passive Tree Priorities — Act 2

  1. Continue Projectile Speed — if you didn't finish the cluster in Act 1, do it now.
  2. Crossbow damage nodes — follow the planner for your Act 2 tree snapshot.
  3. Life nodes — push toward 700–800 Life before Sisters of Garukhan.
  4. Weapon Set 2 passive points — you'll gain more from Act 2 quests. Keep both weapon set trees allocated.
  5. After Ascendancy: Supporting Fire first, then Suppressing Fire. Supporting Fire is insane for clear.

🛡️ Gear Checkpoints — Act 2

~700–800 Lifebefore Sisters of Garukhan
🏹 Crossbow
  • If you found a Dyad Crossbow in Act 1 (~level 20), excellent
  • Now hunting for Twin or Gemini Crossbow bases — +1 bolt is a massive DPS jump
  • Prioritise physical damage rolls (converts to cold)
⚗️ Flasks
  • Upgrade Life Flask to Act 2 level range
  • Add a Quicksilver Flask if available (movement speed for kiting)
  • Consider a Granite Flask for defensive buffer during tough bosses

⚔️ Boss Strategy — Sisters of Garukhan

SISTERS OF GARUKHAN — Dual Boss
  • Pre-fight: Drop Frost Bomb on entry for Cold Exposure. Drop Thunderstorm at their feet.
  • Focus one sister at a time — spam Permafrost Bolts until she freezes. You don't have Freezing Mark yet so this takes a few volleys; stay at max range.
  • On freeze: swap to Set 2, detonate with Fragmentation Rounds. Then continue Permafrost Bolts — the cold damage bonus after a detonation helps you freeze again faster.
  • Use Supporting Fire (Tactician) aggressively — it does heavy AoE damage and stacks freeze buildup on the sisters significantly.
  • The sisters use linked mechanics — when one is frozen, the other may rage. Watch for telegraphed sweeping attacks and strafe out.
  • After first sister dies: immediately refocus Permafrost Bolts on the second. Her health resets freeze progress from zero.
Lightning Resistance — Sisters Lightning Resistance is 0% at this point — the Sisters use lightning mechanics. Make sure you have at least some resist from the +10% Lightning Res quest reward from Act 1's Crowbell, and any gear you've found.

⚠️ Common Mistakes — Act 2

  • Picking Witchhunter at first Ascendancy — Tactician is correct for leveling. Witchhunter is endgame.
  • Not using Supporting Fire actively — it's not just a passive node, it fires automatically on your targets and dramatically speeds up clearing.
  • Expecting Freezing Mark to be available — it's not yet. Bosses require raw Permafrost Bolts pressure to freeze. Don't panic if it feels slow on the first boss.
  • Not upgrading the Life Flask — Act 2 enemies hit much harder than Act 1.
  • Engaging Titan-type enemies at close range — they have massive melee AoE. Stay at max crossbow range.
  • Skipping the +1 Charm Slot reward from Valley of the Titans — charms are strong defensive utility.
  • Forgetting Thunderstorm — drop it at boss feet before engaging. It applies Shock for ~20% more damage taken.

✅ End-of-Act 2 Checklist

  • Ascendancy completed — TACTICIAN selected, Supporting Fire allocated
  • Thunderstorm + Prolonged Duration I added to Weapon Set 2
  • All support gem names updated: Elemental Armament (not Weapon Elemental Damage), Concentrated Area (not Concentrated Effect), Magnified Area (not Increased AoE)
  • Life at ~800+
  • Quest rewards: Weapon Set Points (Kabala) · Charm Slot (Medallion) · Weapon Set Points (Final Letter) · +10% Lightning Res (Sisters)
  • Passive tree following Act 2 planner snapshot (Main: 85/123 nodes allocated)
  • Flask upgraded to Act 2 level range
🎁 QUEST REWARD CHOICE — VALLEY OF THE TITANS
Anything works (Pohx's words)
The Medallion reward gives either Charm Effect Duration or +1 Charm Slot. Pohx says both are fine — take the Charm Slot for more flask-like utility options.

⚔ Act III — The Jungle & The Bog Levels 34–52

🗺️ Act Overview

Act 3 plunges you into ancient jungle ruins, fetid swamps, and industrial machines gone mad. Enemies hit harder and resist effects more stubbornly. You'll also pass through the Molten Vault — which grants access to the Reforging Bench, a key crafting station for SSF.

Entry level: ~34  |  Exit level target: ~50–52

🔑
SSF Gear Watch — Act 3 Life target: 1,000–1,200 by Act 3 final boss. Resistances start mattering more — watch Fire Resistance especially (you get +10% Fire Res from Blackjaw this act). The Reforging Bench in the Molten Vault lets you reroll item mods — use it on your crossbow if you have a good base.
Pro Tip — Suppressing Fire (Tactician) If you haven't taken Suppressing Fire yet, get it this act. It significantly increases freeze buildup speed on enemies, making Act 3's tougher enemies much more manageable. Also: Thunderstorm (from Act 2) continues here — keep it in your Set 2 rotation for bosses.

📍 Zone-by-Zone Checklist

  • Jungle Ruins
Mighty Silverfist boss — Two Weapon Set Passive Points reward. Jungle enemies come in packs — prime freeze targets for Herald of Ice chain kills. ⚔️ Mighty Silverfist
  • The Venom Crypts
Venom Draught boss — important reward choice here (see below). Poison-themed enemies — watch for stacks. Freeze everything quickly to prevent poison application. ⚔️ Venom Draught
  • Jiquani's Machinarium
Blackjaw boss — +10% Fire Resistance reward. Industrial/construct enemies. Watch for heavy melee slams from golem-type enemies — freeze them before they close distance. ⚔️ Blackjaw, the Remnant
  • The Azak Bog
Ignagduk boss — +30 Spirit reward (critical for spirit gem budget). Dense bog enemies with slowing effects. ⚔️ Ignagduk, the Bog Witch
  • The Molten Vault
Unlocks Reforging Bench — a crafting station you can return to. No major boss, but do not skip. Use the bench on a quality crossbow if you have one.
  • Aggorat — Blood Sacrifice

🔑
Act 3 is a big upgrade — Freezing Mark + Shard Scavenger both arrive here Freezing Mark sets bosses to 70% freeze threshold — your freeze speed roughly doubles on bosses. Shard Scavenger gives you 6 seconds of free Permafrost Bolts after each Frag Rounds detonation. This is when the build's full loop clicks into place.
💡
Cold Attunement — Pohx's preference Pohx prefers Cold Attunement over the Freeze support, but notes it only works if your crossbow is primarily Phys or Cold damage. If you have a multi-elemental crossbow, keep the Freeze support instead.
Act 3 Passive Tree Respec (Gold required) Pohx does a big respec here — trading reload nodes at Rapid Reload for nodes below like Reusable Ammunition, and gaining Projectile Speed at Catapult. If you don't have the gold to respec: continue the tree without the bottom reload nodes, or stop at Reusable Ammunition and wait until you can afford it.
💡
Did You Know? — Oil Grenade + Potent Exposure Oil Grenade with Potent Exposure applies elemental exposure to enemies — reducing their resistances and boosting your damage. Drop it on bosses before engaging, same as Frost Bomb.

🌲 Passive Tree Priorities — Act 3

  1. Suppressing Fire (Tactician Ascendancy) — If not taken yet, this is mandatory now. Dramatically speeds up freeze on tough enemies.
  2. Cold damage / elemental damage nodes — Follow the Act 3 planner snapshot.
  3. Life nodes — Push toward 1,000–1,200 Life.
  4. Evasion nodes — Begin picking up Evasion clusters as you progress. These become "Life nodes" later when Sorcery Ward is active (endgame).
⚠️
No Resist Penalty in 0.5 RotA Campaign In previous POE2 versions there were resist penalties entering later acts. Confirm this is no longer the case in 0.5 — but always keep your resistances capped regardless.

🛡️ Gear Checkpoints — Act 3

~1,000–1,200 Lifebefore Act 3 final boss
🏹 Crossbow
  • If you have a Dyad, Twin, or Gemini Crossbow base — try Reforging Bench crafting on it
  • Target: High Physical Damage prefix + any cold/elemental damage
  • Aim for a natural upgrade around level 40–45
🛡️ Resistances
  • Fire Res: +10% from Blackjaw this act — cap with gear
  • Cold Res: should be decent from Act 1 reward + gear
  • Lightning Res: most likely your gap — prioritise on rings/amulet
⚗️ Flasks
  • Upgrade Life Flask to Act 3 level range — mandatory
  • Add a Jade Flask (Evasion) for ranged fights
  • Keep Quicksilver if you have it — mobility is life
💠 Spirit Budget Check
  • +30 Spirit from Ignagduk this act helps
  • Target: enough Spirit for Herald of Ice + Shard Scavenger + Freezing Mark + Thunderstorm
  • Eternal Rage is free if you find the new amulet

⚔️ Boss Strategy — Act 3

VENOM DRAUGHT — Notable Mid-Act Boss
  • Poison-applying boss. Freeze it before it can stack poison on you — this is non-negotiable.
  • Freezing Mark → Permafrost Bolts spam until frozen → Fragmentation Rounds → Shard Scavenger window.
  • If frozen in a dangerous position, use a Life Flask immediately and keep moving even through the free-fire window.
BLOOD SACRIFICE — Act 3 Final Boss
  • Ritual/summoning-type boss. Expect add waves — use Permafrost Bolts on adds to shatter and trigger Herald of Ice for clear.
  • Apply Freezing Mark on the boss itself. Drop Thunderstorm at boss feet before engaging.
  • Watch for a phase transition (typically ~50% Life) — back off, re-evaluate positioning, re-apply Freezing Mark.
  • Shard Scavenger is your lifeline — freeze, detonate, shoot freely for 6 seconds. Repeat.
Pro Tip — Pre-loading Permafrost Bolts Enter boss rooms with Permafrost Bolts already loaded. This lets you immediately fire on the boss before it has a chance to act — getting your first freeze off faster.

⚠️ Common Mistakes — Act 3

  • Skipping the Molten Vault — the Reforging Bench is a major SSF crafting resource.
  • Ignoring lightning resistance — Act 3 has lightning damage. Check your lightning res on entry.
  • Not adding Thunderstorm — the Shock and other elemental interactions are a meaningful DPS boost on bosses.
  • Getting too close to Bog Witch enemies — they slow and debuff. Use max range, kite continuously.
  • Not upgrading flask to Act 3 item level — your heal amount doesn't scale without upgrading the flask base.

✅ End-of-Act 3 Checklist

  • Freezing Mark + Prolonged Duration I + Eternal Mark added to Weapon Set 2
  • Shard Scavenger + Prolonged Duration I + Precision I added to Weapon Set 2
  • Oil Grenade + Potent Exposure added (use before boss fights for exposure)
  • Suppressing Fire (Tactician) allocated — second ascendancy node done
  • Act 3 passive respec done (or planned) — Rapid Reload nodes traded for Reusable Ammunition + Catapult Projectile Speed
  • Life at ~1,200+
  • Reforging Bench accessed in The Molten Vault
  • Quest rewards: Weapon Set Points (Mighty Silverfist) · Elemental Ailment Threshold (Venom Draught) · +10% Fire Res (Blackjaw) · +30 Spirit (Ignagduk) · Weapon Set Points (Blood Sacrifice)
  • All resistances reasonably capped
  • Flask upgraded to Act 3 level range
  • Passive tree following Act 3 planner snapshot (Main: 77/123 nodes pre-respec — count drops after the Rapid Reload → Reusable Ammunition respec, then climbs again through Act 4)
🎁 REWARD CHOICE — THE VENOM CRYPTS (Venom Draught)
Stun — 30% increased Elemental Ailment Threshold
Pohx took Stun. Ailment threshold is the other option. Both are fine, but Stun gives you more freeze wiggle room on heavy-hitting enemies.

⚔ Act IV — The Halls of the Dead Levels 52–68

🗺️ Act Overview

Act 4 is a gauntlet of death-god trials and ancient tests. The Halls of the Dead require you to complete a series of divine trials from Tawhoa, Tasalio, and Ngamahu — each a dangerous boss encounter. Journey's End sets the tone: this act is not forgiving.

Entry level: ~52  |  Exit level target: ~65–68 (into Interlude)

🔑
SSF Gear Watch — Act 4 Push Life toward 1,500–1,800. This is the last act before Interlude — arrive prepared. Resist checks matter here; the elemental trial bosses each deal their elemental type. Begin considering Evasion on gear (prep for eventual Sorcery Ward endgame swap).

📍 Zone-by-Zone Checklist

  • Journey's End — Captain Hartlin
Two Weapon Set Passive Points + Skill Gem (Level 13) + Delirium Drop. The Skill Gem reward at level 13 is significant — pick up a key support gem if available. ⚔️ Captain Hartlin
  • Eye of Hinekora — Navali's Rest
+5% Maximum Mana reward — take it. Mana sustain helps when firing heavily. Optional boss but worth the mana.
  • Halls of the Dead — Yama The White
Two Weapon Set Passive Points. Ice/cold themed — ironically your freeze may be less effective here; watch freeze thresholds. ⚔️ Yama The White
  • Halls of the Dead — Tawhoa's Test
+5% Lightning Resistance. Lightning boss — make sure your lightning res is capped before this fight. ⚔️ Tawhoa's Test
  • Abandoned Prison — Goddess of Justice
30% increased Life Recovery from Flasks — excellent reward. Makes your Life Flask dramatically more effective. ⚔️ Goddess of Justice
  • Halls of the Dead — Tasalio's Test
+5% Cold Resistance. Cold boss — you may be naturally more resilient here but don't get complacent. ⚔️ Tasalio's Test
  • Halls of the Dead — Ngamahu's Test
+5% Fire Resistance. Fire boss. Strongest of the trio in terms of hit damage — keep max range, strafe constantly. ⚔️ Ngamahu's Test

Combined with Freezing Mark (+30% damage as cold) and Shard Scavenger, you're firing with ~60% bonus cold damage for 6 seconds — the second freeze on bosses now lands extremely fast.
💡
Spirit Gems — Full Target by End of Act 4 Set 1 Permafrost Bolts · Herald of Ice · Eternal Rage (via amulet)
Set 2 Fragmentation Rounds · Shard Scavenger · Freezing Mark · Thunderstorm · Eternal Rage · Berserk (when spirit allows)
Passive Tree — Act 4 Snapshot Main tree: 59/123 nodes allocated (post-respec entry baseline — lower than Act 3 due to the Rapid Reload respec). Set 1: 4/20 weapon set points. Set 2: 4/20. Follow the Act 4 in-game planner download from Mobalytics for exact node choices.

🌲 Passive Tree Priorities — Act 4

  1. Cold damage / Projectile Damage scaling — Follow the Act 4 planner snapshot closely. By now the tree should be filling in your core damage path.
  2. Life nodes — Target 1,500–1,800 Life by end of Act 4.
  3. Evasion clusters — Start pathing toward Evasion nodes. These are "pre-investment" for the eventual Sorcery Ward transition in maps.
  4. Weapon Set 2 nodes — Continue allocating Weapon Set points from quests. The green tree nodes are important for Fragmentation Rounds damage.

🛡️ Gear Checkpoints — Act 4

~1,500–1,800 Lifebefore Interlude
🏹 Crossbow
  • Target: Twin or Gemini Crossbow base if you don't have one yet — this is getting urgent
  • Use Reforging Bench if you have a good base to improve prefixes
  • An upgrade around level 55–60 is ideal
💎 Amulet
  • Look for the new 0.5 amulet that grants free Eternal Rage — it unlocks your full spirit gem budget
  • Without it: Spirit becomes very tight when adding Berserk
🛡️ Resistances
  • Each trial boss deals its element — cap all three before entering Halls of the Dead
  • Fire Res, Cold Res, Lightning Res all matter
  • You'll gain +5% of each element from the trial rewards
⚗️ Flasks
  • Upgrade Life Flask to Act 4 item level
  • 30% Life Recovery from Flasks (Goddess of Justice) makes your flask much stronger
  • Keep a Jade (Evasion) or Granite flask for trial bosses

⚔️ Boss Strategy — Halls Trials + Captain Hartlin

CAPTAIN HARTLIN — Journey's End
  • Standard boss approach: Freezing Mark → Permafrost Bolts → Frag Rounds detonation → Shard Scavenger window.
  • Hartlin likely has movement abilities — keep distance, strafe aggressively.
  • Drop Thunderstorm at his location before engaging. Frost Bomb for Cold Exposure.
HALLS OF THE DEAD TRIAL BOSSES
  • Each trial boss (Yama, Tawhoa, Tasalio, Ngamahu) uses their elemental theme heavily.
  • Ensure your resist to their element is capped before entry — resist cap matters here.
  • Same rotation: Frost Bomb → Freezing Mark → Permafrost Bolts → Freeze → Frag Rounds detonate → free-fire window.
  • Ngamahu (fire) hits hardest — flask timing is critical. Pop Life Flask at 60% Life, not lower.
  • Use Berserk on Set 2 for extra burst during the free-fire window if you have it equipped.
🧊
Freeze Check — Trial Bosses Some trial bosses have higher freeze thresholds than campaign bosses. If a boss isn't freezing after 3+ volleys, use Suppressing Fire (Tactician) actively — it stacks freeze buildup from projectile hits. Make sure Freezing Mark is always active.

⚠️ Common Mistakes — Act 4

  • Entering a trial boss with uncapped resistance to their element — check before each fight.
  • Using Berserk on Weapon Set 1 — the Degen applies regardless of set. Only equip Berserk on Set 2 where Eternal Rage cancels it.
  • Skipping Navali's Rest (Mana reward) — mana sustain matters when firing rapid-fire Permafrost Bolts during Shard Scavenger windows.
  • Not upgrading Life Flask — 30% Life Recovery from Goddess of Justice is a game-changer; make sure your flask is upgraded to take advantage.
  • Going into Ngamahu's Test undergeared — it's the hardest of the trio. If dying repeatedly, check Life and Fire Resist first.

✅ End-of-Act 4 Checklist

  • All Halls of the Dead trials completed (Yama, Tawhoa, Tasalio, Ngamahu)
  • Ice Bite II active on Permafrost Bolts (upgraded from I)
  • Herald of Ice now has Elemental Focus as 3rd support
  • Life at ~1,800+
  • All resistances capped going into Interlude
  • Quest rewards: Weapon Set Points + Skill Gem L13 (Hartlin) · +5% Mana (Navali) · Weapon Set Points (Yama) · +5% Lightning Res (Tawhoa) · 30% Life Flask Recovery (Goddess) · +5% Cold Res (Tasalio) · +5% Fire Res (Ngamahu)
  • Passive tree following Act 4 planner snapshot (Main: 59/123 nodes — post-respec baseline, builds back up through the act)
  • Crossbow upgraded — ideally Twin or Gemini Crossbow base
  • Passive tree includes early Evasion cluster pathing (prep for Sorcery Ward in endgame)
🎁 REWARD CHOICE — ACT 4 TATTOOS (if applicable)
Elemental Resistance
Pohx chose Elemental Resistance over Attributes — "both are fine, although I prefer resistance." In SSF, capping resists is harder so Elemental Resistance is the safer pick.
🔑
Congratulations — Campaign Complete! What's Next? Enter the Interlude. First stop: Tabana's Pillar — gives +5% to all Elemental Resistances. Then grab +40 Spirit from Lythara. Begin planning your 2nd Ascendancy respec from Tactician → Witchhunter when you hit maps. The Witchhunter nodes (Zealous Inquisition, No Mercy, eventually Sorcery Ward) are your endgame power spikes.
