The Evil Within Β· Route
A detective wakes inside a nightmare that rewrites the room every time he blinks. Burn what falls, hoard your matches, and never fight what you can slip past. The descent, tracked.
The system that decides this game is scarcity, and the two things that beat it are stealth and fire. A crouched Sneak Kill costs nothing; a match on a downed enemy is a one-move kill that also stops it getting back up and can catch a whole cluster at once, so herd them and light them. Ammo, syringes and Agony bolt parts are always tight, so slip past what you can and disarm every trap for the parts. Spend Green Gel on Sneak Attack, Stamina and match capacity before weapon damage. First Hours is the systems primer; The Route is all five acts across the 15 chapters; Extras is the Kidman DLC and The Executioner, with a worth-it verdict; Skills & Gear is the upgrade order, the Agony Crossbow and the collectibles. Keep a Flash bolt for the moment a room turns. Every tick saves on this device as you go.
Sneak, and burn. A crouched Sneak Kill is one silent hit and free. A match on a downed enemy is a one-move kill that stops it reviving and can torch a whole cluster at once, so knock a group together and light them. Everything is scarce, so slip past fights you can and disarm every trap for Agony bolt parts. Spend Green Gel on Sneak Attack, Stamina and match capacity first. Keep a Flash bolt for the moment a room turns.
The difficulty is scarcity, and stealth plus fire is the answer. Every enemy you Sneak Kill or burn is ammo you did not spend. Burning is the highest-value move in the game: one match finishes a downed enemy for good and a lit body sets fire to anything touching it, so a group herded together dies to a single match. Play it as a stealth-and-fire game, not a shooter.
Light. Covers the opening chapters and the systems only. For the full 15-chapter route use The Route; for the Kidman DLC and The Executioner use Extras; for the upgrade order, the Agony Crossbow and the collectibles, Skills & Gear.
Tally your opening hours. Items marked β shared also live on The Route or Skills & Gear — tick them anywhere and they stay in sync.
Guns feel like the answer and are the fastest way to run dry. A straight fight trades your scarcest resource for enemies you could have knifed or burned for free. Shoot to finish what stealth or fire started, or to break a grab — not to open a room.
A match is precious. Do not burn a single, isolated enemy you could Sneak Kill for free, and do not light one body when two more are a step away. Herd, then burn. One match on a cluster is several kills; one match on a loner is a waste.
Cheap early, carries the whole run. Buy roughly in this order at the Safe Haven chair.
| Upgrade | Menu | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sneak Attack damage | Attributes | β Bigger one-hit stealth kills keep tougher enemies inside the quiet loop. Your main output. |
| Stamina | Attributes | Run longer from what you cannot kill. Escapes win fights you should not take. |
| Match capacity | Stock | Burning is the best damage in the game. Carry more matches, kill more per fire. |
| Syringe capacity | Stock | More heals on hand. Simple survivability in a game that rarely lets you restock. |
| Agony bolt parts capacity | Stock | Hold more salvage so a good trap-run funds several bolts. |
| Health | Attributes | Useful, but a bigger bar is worth less than not being hit. Mid-priority. |
| Handgun capacity | Stock | Small, steady. Take it after the survival picks, not before. |
When you down an enemy (a Sneak Kill that does not finish, or a stagger), walk up and burn it rather than swinging again. If two or three are close, pull them together first. A body on fire ignites the next one, so a tight group is a one-match kill and your best answer to a crowd you cannot avoid.
Handgun and shotgun damage upgrades look powerful and do little for a run that should barely be firing. Early gel belongs in Sneak Attack, Stamina and Stock. Come back to weapon damage once you have a stable ammo supply, which is late.
Spoiler-safe: what each threat is asking of you, not where it appears.
| Threat | The answer |
|---|---|
| The Haunted (basic) | Sneak Kill from cover. If it drops but is not dead, burn it before it rises. |
| A group | Lure them onto oil or into a tight cluster, then one match. A Flash bolt buys the setup time. |
| The Sadist (chainsaw) | β Do not melee. Flash bolt or a trap to stun, then shotgun to the head, or simply run the intro. |
| Invisible Haunted | Watch for the shimmer and footprints; throw bottles to bait them, a Flash or Freeze bolt pins them. |
| The burned one (fire boss) | β Fire only. Bullets do nothing. Use torches, fire traps and burning barrels; keep running. |
| The Keeper (safe-head) | Keep distance, hit it with Agony bolts or heavy rounds, and use the incinerator. It reassembles, so break line of sight and move. |

Three add-ons ship with the game. The Kidman two-parter (The Assignment and The Consequence) is a canonical, stealth-first story that bridges directly into The Evil Within 2 — play it. The Executioner is a first-person, play-as-the-Keeper combat mode; it is a curiosity, not part of the story run. Verdicts and a short route below.
| DLC | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The Assignment | β Must-do | Canonical Kidman story, roughly a couple of hours, pure stealth (no firearms). It reframes the main game and sets up TEW2. |
| The Consequence | β Must-do | The direct continuation. More of the same stealth-and-puzzle Kidman run, and the cleanest bridge into TEW2. |
| The Executioner | Curiosity | First-person melee boss-rush as the Keeper, Survival mode only, upgrades via Memory Tokens. Fun for fans; skip on a story-first run. |
Best order is the base game, then The Assignment and The Consequence back to back, then TEW2. The Kidman DLC answers questions the main game leaves open and makes TEW2's opening land far harder. The Executioner can go whenever; nothing depends on it.
Kidman plays differently: stealth and puzzles, barely any combat. In The Assignment she has no firearms at all — flashlight, bottles and the occasional axe. The Consequence loosens that a little and leans on chemical lights and pushing enemies off ledges. Tick the four chapters as you clear them.
A standalone first-person mode where you play as the Keeper (the safe-headed executioner), clearing arenas of the main game's bosses in melee-focused Survival with no difficulty select. Upgrades come from Memory Tokens, not Green Gel. It is light on story and plays nothing like the campaign, so treat it as a bonus brawl rather than part of the route.
The Kidman DLC has its own collectibles, but community counts and locations for them are less consistent than the base game's. They are tracked here at the chapter level only; Claude Code's link pass will flag any per-item list that needs a firmer source before it goes in.
Green Gel goes into Sneak Attack, Stamina and Stock (match, syringe and bolt-part capacity) before weapon damage. The Agony Crossbow is your best tool and runs on trap salvage, so disarm every trap. Flash bolts are the standout: they stun a whole group into free kills. Pick one or two guns to feed with parts rather than spreading thin, and remember a match is often better than a bullet.
No upgrade makes Beacon safe. What keeps you alive is matches, a Flash bolt, and enough syringes to survive a mistake. Every pick below protects that supply line: stealth so you spend less, Stock so you carry more of what matters, and salvage so the crossbow stays fed.
Tick each purchase and pickup as you make it. This checklist is The Evil Within specific and saves as you go.
Three menus at the Safe Haven chair: your Attributes, your Weapons, and your Stock (carry capacity). Spend where it protects the run.
| Upgrade | Menu | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sneak Attack damage | Attributes | β β β | Your primary damage. Bigger stealth kills keep the quiet loop working on tougher foes. |
| Stamina | Attributes | β β β | Running is a survival tool here. Longer sprint wins the fights you should avoid. |
| Match / Syringe capacity | Stock | β β β | Burning is your best crowd answer and syringes are your only heals. Carry more of both. |
| Agony bolt parts capacity | Stock | β β | Hold more salvage so a trap sweep funds several bolts at once. |
| Health / Recovery | Attributes | β β | Solid mid-run picks once the survival basics are covered. |
| Handgun / Shotgun capacity | Stock | β β | Steady value. Capacity beats raw damage while ammo is this tight. |
| Weapon damage | Weapons | β | Late only. Powerful on paper, wasted on a run that should barely be firing. |
The Weapons menu is tempting and premature. Until your ammo supply is stable, every point there is a point stolen from Sneak Attack, Stamina or Stock, which are what actually keep you alive. Upgrade weapons last.
The signature weapon. Bolts are crafted from trap salvage, so it costs no ammo drops — only the parts you disarm. Each bolt answers a different problem.
| Bolt | Rating | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Flash Bolt | β β β | Stuns everything in a radius into free Sneak Kills, and destroys some enemies outright. The best bolt in the game. |
| Harpoon Bolt | β β | Cheap single-target damage, sometimes recoverable. The default when you just need a kill. |
| Explosive Bolt | β β | Burst damage for clusters and set-pieces. Save a few for the named fights. |
| Freeze Bolt | β β | Locks a heavy or a boss in place for free hits. A boss-fight staple. |
| Shock Bolt | β β | Electrocutes groups, and anything standing in water. Great on the wet levels. |
| Smoke Bolt | β | Break line of sight and reset a bad fight to stealth. Situational. |
At the start of a chapter, clear it quietly, disarm every trap, and smash any statue you pass. You arrive at the next Safe Haven with bolt parts, keys and gel in hand, which is the whole difference between a comfortable act and a scramble.
The Evil Within is essentially a single ending — there is no branch to hunt or collectible to unlock for a different finish. What the base game leaves deliberately open is answered by the Kidman DLC in the Extras tab, which is the real reason to play it before TEW2. That is all you need going in; the specifics stay out on purpose.
A first run is roughly 15 to 20 hours. There is no level to hit; a comfortable finish just means you kept matches and a Flash bolt in reserve, fed the crossbow off traps, and took the quiet kill by default. New Game Plus carries your upgrades forward for the collectible and locker cleanup (the "Every Nook and Cranny" and "Master of Unlocking" runs), and harder difficulties unlock for players who want the survival screws turned all the way in.
