The Evil Within 2 Β· Union Route
A father walks back into the machine to find his daughter, into a town that rebuilds itself around the people who broke it. Sneak the streets, sweep every signal, and pick your fights. The descent, tracked.
Difficulty here is resource pressure, not enemy stats. Ammo, gunpowder and healing are all scarce, so the run is won by stealth first: crouch, wait, and take the free Sneak Kill instead of the loud one. The town of Union opens up in a handful of chapters, and those are where the crossbow parts, the upgrades and the collectibles live — sweep them with the Communicator before the story pulls you underground, because the map reshapes as you go. Spend Green Gel on Health, then Stealth, then Recovery; save Explosive and Freeze bolts for the set-pieces. First Hours is the systems primer; The Route is all five acts across the 17 chapters; Union is the open-world layer, the side missions, the Residual Memories and the Slides; Skills & Gear is the Green Gel order, the Warden Crossbow, and the endings. Keep a spare pistol round for a stealth reset. Every tick saves on this device as you go.
Sneak first, always. A crouched Sneak Kill is one hit, silent, and free — it is your main source of damage for the whole game. Ammo and gunpowder are scarce, so craft on the go only when you must (it costs extra) and craft at a workbench when you can. Spend Green Gel on Health, then Stealth before anything else. When a chapter opens up the town, sweep it with the Communicator for signals before the story pulls you on, because the map changes as you go. Save Explosive and Freeze bolts for the bosses.
The system that gates difficulty is your supply line, and stealth is what protects it. Every enemy you Sneak Kill is ammo you did not spend and damage you did not take. The bottle throw pulls a straggler out of a group so you can knife it; a crouch-walk past a pack is a legitimate win. Players who fight everything head-on run dry by mid-game and stall. Play it as a stealth game that happens to have guns, not a shooter that happens to have bushes.
Light. Covers the opening chapters and the systems only. For the full 17-chapter route and the live checklist use The Route; for the open-town layer use Union; for Green Gel order, the crossbow and the endings, Skills & Gear.
Tally your opening hours. Items marked β shared also live on The Route or Skills & Gear — tick them anywhere and they stay in sync.
The pistol and shotgun feel like the answer and they are the fastest way to run dry. Gunfire pulls the whole area, and a straight fight trades your scarcest resource for enemies you could have knifed for free. Shoot to finish what stealth started, or to break a grab — not to open a room.
Sniper rounds and Explosive bolts are precious, but saving them "for later" means dying to the boss you saved them for. Spend Shock and Harpoon bolts freely (they are cheap and craftable) and keep only the truly rare rounds in reserve for the named set-pieces.
Skills are cheap early and carry the whole run. Buy roughly in this order at the safe-room chair.
| Skill line | Category | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Health I / II | Health | The survivability floor. A little goes a long way when everything hits hard. |
| Quiet Movement | Stealth | Move faster while crouched and stay unheard. This is what makes stealth reliable. |
| Sneak damage | Stealth | β Bigger one-hit takedowns keep tougher enemies inside the stealth loop. |
| Recovery | Recovery | Heals apply faster, so a single syringe or medkit stretches further. |
| Sprint duration | Athleticism | Open Union is large. Longer sprint is quality of life and an escape button. |
| Reload / stability | Combat | Worth it once ammo is steady, not before. Combat is your last Green Gel, not your first. |
A thrown bottle pulls one enemy out of a group to investigate the noise, so you can knife it and slip back into cover. It is free, silent to everyone but the target, and it turns a hopeless three-enemy room into three clean Sneak Kills. Carry a stack at all times.
Recoil and reload upgrades look like power and do nothing for a run that should barely be firing. Every point spent on Combat in the first act is a point not spent on Health or Stealth, which are what actually keep you alive. Come back to Combat once your ammo economy is stable.
Spoiler-safe: what each common threat is asking of you, not where it appears.
| Threat | The answer |
|---|---|
| The Lost (basic) | Sneak Kill from cover. If spotted, back off and reset; do not stand and trade. |
| Groups | Thrown bottle to split them, then pick off. A shock bolt or a well-placed burn if it turns loud. |
| Screaming / summoner types | Kill first and quietly. If one screams, the room becomes a fight you did not want. |
| The Guardian (sawblade) | β Shock bolts stagger it hard; use the environment and keep moving. Do not melee it. |
| Obscura (the camera) | It freezes time when it sees you. Shoot the camera head to break the effect, then damage. |
| Anima (the humming one) | A stealth-and-run encounter, not a fight. Learn her pattern, stay silent, keep moving to the exit. |
| Harbinger (the machine) | Target the exposed weak point; explosives and the crossbow do the heavy lifting. |
Union is semi-open in a handful of chapters, and that is where the run is actually decided: side missions, Residual Memories, Photographic Slides, weapon-part stashes and extra workbenches all live out in the streets. Use the Communicator to hunt every green signal, secure the safe houses as you find them, and finish the town before you trigger the beat that pulls you underground. Every tick saves on this device.
The open chapters are your one window on the town. Treat them like a sweep, not a stroll.
Arrive, find the nearest safe house and unlock it. Open the map, run every Communicator signal and side-mission marker, and pick up Residual Memories and Slides as you pass. Bank materials at the workbench, then and only then trigger the next story objective.
The trackable open-world completion: the Communicator side missions, all 24 Residual Memories and 11 Photographic Slides (both feed the stat cards up top), and the collectible sweeps. Locations are spoiler-safe place hints; open the wiki π on a group for exact spots.
A quick verdict on where to spend your time in the open chapters.
| Content | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Communicator side missions | β Must-do | Weapon parts, gel and quick unlocks for very little time. Do them all in the open chapters. |
| Residual Memories | Worth-it | Free to grab while sweeping, and they carry the town's backstory. The Communicator does the finding for you. |
| Weapon-part & gel stashes | β Must-do | This is your upgrade budget. Skipping them is why a run stalls on ammo and damage. |
| Photographic Slides | Worth-it | Only 11, tied to a completion reward, and mostly on your path. Grab as you go. |
| Files, Objects, Coffee Makers | Skip-run-one | Pure completion. Fun on a second pass, safe to ignore on a first run that wants to keep moving. |
Community guides do not fully agree on the exact count and names of the Communicator side missions. The ones tracked here are the well-attested, repeatably documented ones; a completion pass should treat the list as a floor, not a ceiling, and Claude Code's link pass will flag any that need a firmer source.
Green Gel goes into Health, then Stealth, then Recovery; save Red Gel for the tier locks on those two. The Warden Crossbow is your best tool: Shock and Harpoon bolts are cheap and craftable, Explosive and Freeze bolts are for the set-pieces. Upgrade weapons with Weapon Parts at the workbench and pick one or two guns to invest in rather than spreading parts thin. Keep gunpowder for crafting ammo, not for hoarding.
There is no stat that makes Union safe. What makes it safe is having ammo, a bolt for the moment, and enough herbs to heal. Every pick below protects that supply line: stealth so you spend less, Recovery so heals go further, and one upgraded weapon instead of five half-built ones.
Tick each purchase and pickup as you make it. This checklist is The Evil Within 2 specific and saves as you go.
Five categories, bought at the safe-room chair. Red Gel unlocks the higher tiers, so spend it only where it counts.
| Category | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Health | β β β | The survivability floor. First gel, every run. Everything hits hard here. |
| Stealth (quiet movement, sneak damage) | β β β | The engine of the whole game. Faster crouch-move and bigger Sneak Kills keep you off the trigger. |
| Recovery | β β β | Faster heals mean each syringe and medkit stretches further. Pure value in a scarce economy. |
| Athleticism (sprint, mobility) | β β | Open Union is large; longer sprint is comfort and an escape. Good, not urgent. |
| Combat (reload, stability, recoil) | β | Worth it late, once ammo is steady. Buying it early starves Health and Stealth. |
Reload speed and recoil control read as power and change almost nothing for a run that should barely be firing. In the first act, every Green Gel point belongs in Health or Stealth. Come back to Combat when you have an ammo surplus, which will not be soon.
The crossbow is the one weapon you build around. Bolts are craftable, silent, and each type answers a different problem.
| Bolt | Rating | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Harpoon Bolt | β β β | Cheap, recoverable, silent single-target. Your default ranged pick. |
| Shock Bolt | β β β | Staggers groups and shreds the Guardian. The bolt you spend most freely. |
| Explosive Bolt | β β | Burst damage for clusters and set-pieces. Save a few for bosses. |
| Freeze Bolt | β β | Locks a heavy in place so you can reposition or land free hits. Boss-fight staple. |
| Smoke Bolt | β | Break line of sight and reset a bad fight to stealth. Situational but a lifesaver. |
This is the real difficulty system: everything you fire or upgrade comes out of the same small pile of materials.
A fully upgraded handgun outperforms four half-upgraded weapons because parts are the bottleneck, not slots. Pick your workhorse early, pour parts into it, and treat everything else as situational. The crossbow is the exception: it earns its keep at any upgrade level because the bolts do the work.
The Evil Within 2 has more than one ending, decided by a choice in the final stretch rather than by anything collectible. You do not need a hidden-item hunt to unlock them, and you can see the other outcome by replaying the finale from a chapter select. That is all you need before you play it: the fates themselves are left out on purpose.
A first run lands around 20 to 25 hours if you sweep the open chapters, less if you push straight through. There is no level to hit and nothing gates on a number; a comfortable finish just means a fed crossbow, an upgraded sidearm, Health and Stealth built up, and the habit of taking the quiet kill. New Game+ carries your upgrades forward, and a chapter select lets you go back for the collectibles and the other ending after the credits.
