Dying Light ยท Progression Route
Bitten in the first ten minutes, in a city the world already wrote off. Harran is yours by daylight and theirs after dark. When the city falls behind you, the nightmare keeps moving. The journey, tracked.
Harran has no level gate on a single main quest. What it has is a weapon economy that punishes bad habits and a night cycle that most players spend the whole game avoiding. Three trees level from three different activities: run for Agility, fight for Power, do quests and airdrops for Survivor. Buy Stomp and Conserve Weapons early, stop repairing weapons at 80%, and go out at night far sooner than instinct says. Do your Slums airdrop farming before The Pit, which stops them spawning for good. First Hours is the systems primer; Story Route is all five acts, Harran and the Countryside; Skills & Gear is where the points, the blueprints and the hidden ending live. Old Town raises the stakes. Every tick saves on this device as you go.
No main quest has a level gate. Buy Stomp (Power 9) and Conserve Weapons (Power 6) and stop swinging at trash. Never repair a weapon above 80% — repairs are a hard-capped resource. Hand in DROPs as you find them, never hoard them. Stay on the rooftops. And go out at night in the first few hours, because you lose nothing when you die out there and everything is worth double.
Three trees, three separate activities, and none of them is a class choice. Agility levels from running, climbing and being chased. Power levels from melee kills. Survivor levels from quests, safe zones and airdrop packages. You are not "specced" into anything, so the only way to be underpowered is to have skipped an activity entirely. Do all three by default.
Light. Covers the opening quests and the systems only. For the full 26-quest route and the live checklist use the Story Route tab; for skill order, blueprints and the endings, Skills & Gear.
Tally your opening hours. Items marked โ shared also live on the Story Route or Skills & Gear tabs — tick them anywhere and they stay in sync.
Because package value scales with rank, the intuition is "save them and cash out at 25." That intuition costs you the entire game. Handing DROPs in as you find them needs roughly 270 packages to reach rank 25. Hoarding needs roughly 2,000, because you spend the whole run at low rank earning nothing. Turn them in at every Quartermaster you pass.
A repair restores the bar and burns a full pip regardless of how much bar was missing. Repairing a weapon at 80% durability is throwing away a fifth of the weapon's total lifespan for almost nothing. Run it to nearly zero, then repair. Take Lucky Repair (Survivor 7) for a chance at free ones.
These are cheap, available in the first few ranks, and carry the whole run. Buy roughly in this order.
| Skill | Tree ยท Lvl | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Survival Starter Kit | Survivor 2 | Gates lockpicks, Molotovs and firecrackers. Effectively mandatory. |
| Slide | Agility 3 | Evasion, and it doubles as stamina recovery while still moving. |
| Vault | Agility 4 | The escape button for the whole early game. Leave the crowd, don't fight it. |
| Dropkick | Agility 4 | Knocks down almost anything and sets up Stomp. Also the roof-edge kill tool. |
| Health Regen | Agility 5 | Medkits are currency. Regen means you spend fewer of them. |
| Conserve Weapons | Power 6 | About 25% less durability loss per hit, on every hit, forever. |
| Light Drop | Agility 6 | Falls kill more new players than zombies do. |
| Lucky Repair | Survivor 7 | The only mitigation in the game for the hard repair cap. |
| Stomp | Power 9 | โ Instant kill on any downed enemy at zero durability cost. The best skill in the game. |
| Camouflage | Survivor 9 | 45 seconds of walking through a horde. Needs Crafting Expertise (Survivor 5) first. |
| Forward Roll | Agility 10 | Cancels otherwise lethal fall damage outright. |
| Grappling Hook | Survivor 12 | Optional and genuinely divisive. See the note below. |
Kick to knock down, then Stomp. Both cost zero durability and zero stamina. Save actual swings for Virals, Goons, Demolishers, Volatiles and human enemies. Players who fight everything with the weapon burn through their entire arsenal by Old Town and then wonder why the game got hard.
Sturdiness 1/2/3 (Power 4/7/13) raise max HP, which sounds like survivability and isn't. A bigger bar means each medkit restores a smaller share of it, so you get less mileage from the same supplies. Health Regen (Agility 5, then 13) and Healing Efficiency in the Legend tree are the better buys.
It is a Survivor skill at rank 12, not a quest reward, and it is the single best "escape a Volatile chase alive" tool in the game. It also collapses the parkour into a button. If you came to Dying Light for the movement, the common advice is to delay it past the story and enjoy it in The Following instead. There is no coded XP penalty for using it — you simply stop performing the climbs that generate Agility XP.
Everything here is about operating in Harran rather than levelling Crane: the night as an XP engine, the 8 GRE quarantine zones, the 16 safe zones, the collectibles worth chasing, and The Following’s buggy, Trust and hidden ending. Every tick saves on this device.
Night is the game's headline feature and the thing new players spend twenty hours dodging. That's backwards, and the maths says so.
Have Vault, Slide and Light Drop. Pick one nearby objective — an airdrop or a quarantine zone — with a known safe house between it and you. Carry UV flares. Go at dusk, not midnight. Come back at dawn. Do that three times and the night stops being a fear and starts being your XP engine.
The trackable open-world completion: clear the eight quarantine zones for the Trespassing trophy, secure the safe houses before you run at night, and decide which collectibles are worth your time.
The buggy is a fourth progression tree. Driver XP comes from driving and running things over; levels 1 to 5 of every part unlock through that tree plus merchant purchases.
Five blueprints, one per slot: engine (small eastern island), turbo (wagon near a northern lair entrance), suspension (southern wagon), traction (northern highway trailer), brakes (south-east wagon). All five sit in military crates that need the Military Keycard, which Jasir gives you at the end of The Gathering. You cannot reach them before that story beat, so stop hunting for them early.
| Trust rank | Reward |
|---|---|
| Outsider | Starting state |
| Stranger | Stranger Outfit |
| Newcomer | Compound Crossbow + Regular Bolts + blueprints |
| Ally | Ally Outfit + Elemental Bolts blueprint |
| Believer | Upgraded Crossbow blueprint |
| Disciple | Acolyte Outfit; Crane can speak with the Faceless directly |
Trust comes from side quests, unlocking safe zones, finding missing persons and roadside events. Three main quests are trust-gated — Stranger in a Strange Land, The Gathering and Anomalies — and no source publishes the numeric thresholds, so if a quest looks stuck, go earn trust rather than reloading.
Unlocked off the Military Keycard from Jasir during The Gathering. This ending is armed out in the world, independently of the finale conversation, and the game lets you keep playing afterwards.
At the dam, the Mother offers a choice. Comply and Refuse send the finale in two opposed directions, each with its own outcome for Crane and for Harran. Neither locks your save. Advanced restart from the main menu replays the finale with your skills, inventory and buggy rank intact so you can take the other one.
Spend early points on Stomp, Conserve Weapons, Vault, Slide, Camouflage and the two Health Regen tiers. Treat weapons as disposable until rank 25 and save every King mod and every docket code for then. The blueprints that change your run are Camouflage, the Cloak Potion, Exploding Throwing Stars, Natural Medkits and the Korek Machete. Legend levels start once a tree maxes, and Nightmare pays 10x by day and 20x by night.
There is no stat to grind that makes Harran safe. What makes it safe is having medkits, throwables and a weapon with pips left. Every recommendation below is really about protecting that supply line: fewer swings, fewer repairs, more crafting.
Tick each purchase and pickup as you make it. This checklist is Dying Light specific and saves as you go.
Three trees. Survivor caps at 25, Agility and Power at 24. You will not buy everything and you do not need to.
| Skill | Tree ยท Lvl | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stomp | Power 9 | โ โ โ | Instant kill on downed enemies, zero durability. The single best purchase in the game. |
| Conserve Weapons | Power 6 | โ โ โ | ~25% less durability loss per hit. Compounds with Stomp. |
| Vault | Agility 4 | โ โ โ | Leave a crowd instead of fighting it. |
| Camouflage | Survivor 9 | โ โ โ | 45s unnoticed. Turns quarantine zones into looting, not combat. Needs Crafting Expertise (5). |
| Survival Starter Kit | Survivor 2 | โ โ โ | Lockpicks, Molotovs, firecrackers. Non-negotiable. |
| Health Regen / Regen 2 | Agility 5 / 13 | โ โ โ | The most underrated survivability in the game. Saves medkits. |
| Slide | Agility 3 | โ โ | Evasion plus stamina recovery on the move. |
| Dropkick | Agility 4 | โ โ | Knockdown into Stomp, and the roof-edge kill. |
| Light Drop / Forward Roll | Agility 6 / 10 | โ โ โ | Forward Roll cancels lethal fall damage outright. |
| Lucky Repair | Survivor 7 | โ โ | Free repairs. The only counter to the pip cap. |
| Focus | Power 8 | โ โ | Consecutive hits on one target ramp damage hard. |
| Elemental Throwing Stars | Survivor 4 | โ โ | Cheap, bulk-craftable, and exploding stars beat human enemies who hide behind cover. |
| Crafting Expertise | Survivor 5 | โ โ โ | Doubles medkit and throwing-star output per material set. Gates Camouflage. |
| Ground Pound / Drop Attack | Power 10 / 7 | โ โ | The standard "jump into a crowd" clear. |
| Ram | Agility 11 | โ โ | Guaranteed knockdown on Virals, which is what actually kills new players. |
| Camouflage Attack | Survivor 12 | โ โ | Kill without breaking cover. Its killer use is silencing Screamers. |
Sturdiness 1/2/3 — bigger health bar, smaller medkit fraction. Whirlwind (Power 11) — halves the stamina cost of an attack you shouldn't be using. Barter / Haggle / Hard Bargain — money stops being scarce almost immediately. Backlash / Instant Escape / Reversal — a redundant grab-mitigation stack once you have Escape. Multi-Throw (Power 3) — weak until you already have good throwables.
This is the actual difficulty system in Dying Light, and it is invisible until it bites.
| Rarity | Colour | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Grey | Your trash-mob beater. Carry one on purpose. |
| Uncommon | Green | Usually off human enemies. |
| Rare | Blue | Solid, more upgrade slots. |
| Exceptional | Purple | Very good, uncommon. |
| Legendary | Orange | 5 repairs. The first tier worth investing in. |
| Gold-tier | Yellow | 6 repairs, best possible stats, unique models. |
| Blueprint | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Medkits | Tutorial, then everywhere | The most important blueprint in the game. Crafting Expertise doubles the output. |
| Natural Medkit | Side quest: Incense Herbs (Slums) | Medkits from herbs alone. Load-bearing on Nightmare. |
| Cloak Potion | End of Dahlia's chain (Slums) | Invisible to the infected with no downside. Trivialises night runs. |
| Exploding Throwing Stars | Elemental Throwing Stars skill (Survivor 4) | 1 blade + 1 gauze + 1 chemical. Widely rated the best throwable, especially against humans in cover. |
| 230V | Main quest: First Assignment | Your first electric mod, and electricity stuns. |
| Korek Machete | Slums easter egg (see the Detours cards) | 569 damage, one-shots for roughly 35 swings. Cannot be repaired or modded, disabled on Nightmare. A consumable, not an investment. |
| Korek Machete 2.0 | Old Town canister hunt | Roughly triple the original. Needs the Enhanced patch. |
| Angel Sword | Side quest: Troll (end of the Rupert chain) | Orange mod, medium burn + medium electricity. Fits blades, machetes, swords, scythes. |
| God Hammer | Side quest: Chasing Past (Old Town) | Orange mod, electricity + burning. Sitting in the cannibal's room, easy to walk past. |
| Right Hand of gloVA | Do You Believe? โ The Shadow of the King | Bouncing electric throwable, harmless to you and allies. |
| Bolter Poison | Give Zere the Bolter tissue during Siblings | Strong toxic melee mod, and you're doing the quest anyway. |
| Air Strike | Antenna, during Broadcast | Crate by the crashed helicopter. Grab it on the way through or lose it. |
| Boosters | Boosters skill (Survivor 3), extended by Booster XL (6) | Stamina, Speed, Resistance and Night Vision. Night Vision is what makes the Bolter hunt bearable. |
It cannot be repaired, cannot be modified, and is disabled entirely on Nightmare. People find it at rank 6, fall in love, and then have no weapon skills and no supply chain when it dies. Craft it, use it for the hard fight, re-craft it later. Do not let it replace learning the combat loop.
Once a tree maxes, further XP from that tree flows into Legend. Cap is 250 Legend levels, starting at 100,000 XP per rank and increasing by 500,000 every 25 ranks. An outfit unlocks every 25th rank.
| Legend skill | Per point | At cap (25) |
|---|---|---|
| Bow / Crossbow | +40% damage | +1000% — a mathematical outlier. Any bow build dumps here first. |
| Firearms | +10% damage | +250% |
| Throwing Weapon | +8% damage | +200% |
| One-Handed Weapon | +4% damage | +100%. The standard first pick for a melee run. |
| Two-Handed Weapon | +4% damage | +100% |
| Unarmed | +15 damage | +375 to fist, tackle and dropkick |
| Health Regeneration | +2 regen ceiling | +50. Second pick. |
| Stamina | +1% max | +25% |
| Health | +3 max HP | +75 |
| Healing Efficiency | +2% healing | +50% |
Legend XP multiplier by difficulty: Story 0.5x, Normal 1x, Hard 2.5x, Nightmare 10x by day and 20x at night. That is why endgame Legend farming is a Nightmare-night activity. The catch: Nightmare removes infinite combat stamina, makes medkits heal over time instead of instantly, hides Volatiles from the minimap even when alerted, and deducts 100% of your progress toward the current Legend rank when you die. The standard route is Normal for the story, Nightmare afterwards.
A comfortable run finishes Harran somewhere around Survivor 18 to 22 with a stealth-and-supply habit rather than a big weapon, and finishes The Following in the mid-twenties with a level 6 buggy. There is no correct endgame number because nothing gates on it. Base game is roughly 20 hours for the story or 40-plus with the side content worth doing; The Following adds another 15 to 20. The credits close nothing: both maps stay open, the Bounty system unlocks, and 100% story completion opens New Game+.
