A min-max survival plan for a fresh Chosen Undead — load up on power, gear, and safety margin before the Lands of Lordran start punishing you.
Lordran is a locked box and the two Bells are the key. Ring the Bells of Awakening to open Sen's Fortress, climb to Anor Londo, and claim the Lordvessel — then the world cracks open. From there you hunt four Lord Souls, fill the vessel, and face Gwyn at the Kiln of the First Flame, where you link the Fire or claim the Dark. First Hours is the min-max survival start; Full Progression is the spoiler-structured walkthrough with every boss, bell and missable; Leveling is the Pyromancer stat plan. Every tick saves on this device as you go.
Start Pyromancer (lowest Soul Level in the game) and pick the Master Key as your gift. Get to Firelink, then Undead Burg. Buy a Short Bow + arrows and shoot the dragon's tail on the bridge for the Drake Sword — an absurd early weapon. Ring the first Bell of Awakening (Bell Gargoyles). Along the way grab Havel's Ring, the Grass Crest Shield, and pump Vitality & Endurance. Use the Master Key to raid Valley of Drakes for free gear and souls. Kindle bonfires for more Estus. Survive.
Light. This guide covers the opening zones and names a few early bosses only. For the full spoiler-structured walkthrough with a live checklist, use the Full Progression tab. For deeper stat planning, see Leveling.
Tally your opening hours as you go. Items marked ↔ shared also live on the Full Progression tracker — tick them in either place and both stay in sync.
Two choices at character creation set the tone for your whole run: your class and your gift. For a survival-focused min-max start, the answer is Pyromancer + Master Key.
Pyromancer begins at Soul Level 1 — the lowest starting level of any class. Because leveling cost scales with your current level, starting low means every early level is cheaper, so your souls stretch further and you power-spike faster. Its stats are balanced (no dumped stat to fix later), it comes with a reliable Hand Axe, and its Pyromancy Flame deals fire damage that scales off upgrading the flame, not Intelligence or Faith — a free ranged/burst option you can grow without spending a level on a casting stat.
Knight is the pure-tank alternative: heavier armor and a 100%-block shield out of the gate. Safe, but it starts at a higher Soul Level and leans into heavy poise play. Pyromancer gives you tankiness and a fire button, and levels faster. If pixel-perfect blocking sounds more relaxing than dodging, Knight is a fine second choice. Classes (wiki)
The Master Key opens most basic locked doors for free. Early it cracks the door to Havel the Rock's tower (Havel's Ring + armor), opens the Valley of Drakes gate for a gear run (§02), and skips padlocked detours. No other starting gift comes close for a knowledgeable solo run. Master Key (wiki)
In Elden Ring you skipped Margit and ran deep to gather gear and runes, then came back stronger. Dark Souls has its own version — and the Master Key is the whole key to it. From Firelink you can reach Valley of Drakes almost immediately, loot free gear and souls, and even punch a shortcut straight into Blighttown. Do as much or as little as your nerve allows.
Firelink Shrine → take the elevator down toward New Londo Ruins → at the bottom, head right along the wall to the locked gate → Master Key opens it → you're in the Valley of Drakes.
The Blue Drakes hit hard and their tails do big damage. Sprint, grab-and-go, and don't wake the sleeping Undead Dragon — run past its body to the sword corpse. Smash-and-grab, not a clear.
From the first small bridge in the Valley, turn right into the green-hued tunnel — it drops you into the Blighttown swamp, skipping Lower Undead Burg, the Depths, and the upper half of Blighttown. This is how you can rush the second Bell (Quelaag) early. Powerful, but Blighttown is brutal without upgrades, so most first-timers grab the Valley gear now and save the dive for later. Valley of Drakes (wiki)
Where a smart route separates a smooth run from a miserable one. Shop the caged Male Undead Merchant for a Short Bow + 50–60 arrows and the Residence Key (frees Griggs).
The Hellkite Dragon perches on the bridge. Stand on the stairwell landing (out of its fire), aim up at its tail, and shoot — roughly two stacks of arrows. The tail drops the Drake Sword: fixed high damage, low requirements (16 STR / 10 DEX), and it massively out-damages anything else this early. It carries you through the first several bosses.
The Drake Sword doesn't scale and gets outclassed once you upgrade a "real" weapon at Andre. That's fine — its job is to make your first 5–10 hours easy. Use it, then graduate. See the Leveling tab for the weapon-pivot plan.
At the top of the Burg, run to the tower, climb the ladder, and plunge-attack onto its head — repeat or finish with the Drake Sword. Watch for the optional Black Knight on a side path; he hits like a truck, so skip him until comfortable. Undead Burg (wiki)
Solaire of Astora's golden sign sits before the Gargoyle fog — jolly co-operation makes it trivial. Undead Parish (wiki)
| Item | Where (early) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Havel's Ring | Havel's tower by the dragon bridge (Master Key) | +50% equip load — heavier armor without fat-rolling. |
| Grass Crest Shield | Darkroot Basin, corpse near the Hydra lake | Passive +stamina regen even on your back. Keep it all game. |
| Dragon Crest Shield | Valley of Drakes (Master Key run, §02) | 100% physical block + high fire resist. Panic shield for fire zones. |
| Ring of Favor & Protection | Lautrec's questline | +HP, +stamina, +equip load. (Breaks if removed.) |
| Fire Keeper Soul | Undead Parish + others | Reinforce the Estus Flask so each sip heals more. |
| Hour | Goal | Key pickups |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 | Create Pyromancer + Master Key. Clear the Asylum. Reach Firelink. | Estus, Hand Axe, bonfire anchor |
| 1–2 | Learn combat in the Burg. Shop the merchant. Cut the dragon tail. | Drake Sword, Short Bow, Residence Key |
| 2–3 | Beat the Taurus Demon. Cross to the Parish. Reinforce to +5. | Fire Keeper Soul, Titanite |
| 3–4 | Grab Havel's Ring. Optional Valley of Drakes gear run. | Havel's Ring, Dragon Crest Shield, souls |
| 4–5 | Detour Darkroot Basin for Grass Crest Shield. Ring the first Bell. | Grass Crest Shield, Bell #1 |
| 5–8+ | Level Vitality/Endurance. Kindle Firelink. Push toward the second Bell. | +Estus, Large Ember, Blighttown |
Once both Bells are rung, the journey opens wide. Use the Full Progression tab for the spoiler-structured walkthrough + live checklist, and Leveling for the Pyromancer stat plan.
A Pyromancer's power comes from upgrading the Pyromancy Flame (no stat cost) and dumping levels into Vitality and Endurance. Add just enough Attunement for spell slots and enough Strength/Dexterity to swing your weapon. Never touch Intelligence, Faith, or Resistance for a pyromancy build. Aim for roughly SL 80–120 by Gwyn.
Tick each breakpoint as you hit it. Items marked ↔ shared also appear on the First Hours startup checklist — tick either and both stay in sync.
Survival in Dark Souls is mostly Vitality (HP) and Endurance (stamina + equip load). For a Pyromancer, everything else is need-based.
| Stat | Priority | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitality | ★★★ | 20 → 30 → 40–50 | Raw HP. The single best survival stat. Soft caps around 30 and 50. |
| Endurance | ★★★ | up to 40 | Stamina for rolls/attacks/blocks and equip load. Stamina stops growing at 40 — don't go past it for stamina. |
| Attunement | ★★ | 10 → 16 | Spell slots for pyromancies. See the breakpoint table below. |
| Strength | ★ | weapon req | Only enough to wield your weapon. Two-handing gives ×1.5 STR, so the Drake Sword's 16 STR needs just 11 two-handed. |
| Dexterity | ★ | weapon req | Same — meet the requirement of the weapon you actually main, no more. |
| Intelligence / Faith | — | leave at base | Pyromancy does not scale with these. Zero reason to level them on a pyro build. |
| Resistance | ✗ | never | The trap stat — poor returns on defense/poise. Do not level it. |
Here's the trick that makes Pyromancer so strong for min-maxing: your Pyromancy Flame's damage scales with the flame's upgrade level, not with any stat. You pay souls to the trainer, not levels, so your fire damage grows for free while your levels go entirely into survival.
When you're sitting on souls and unsure whether to level, ask: "Is my flame upgraded?" A higher flame often out-values another point of Vitality in the early-to-mid game.
Attunement grants spell slots at set thresholds. Level to a breakpoint, then stop — points between breakpoints do nothing for slots.
| Attunement | Spell slots |
|---|---|
| 10 | 1 |
| 12 | 2 |
| 14 | 3 |
| 16 | 4 |
| 19 | 5 |
| 23 | 6 |
For a survival-first pyro, 10–16 Attunement (1–4 slots) is plenty. Go higher only if you want to lean hard into spellcasting.
Rough SL bands to aim for as you progress. If you're comfortably inside the band, you're not under- or over-levelled. These mirror the zone bands on the Full Progression page.
| Zone | Soul Level |
|---|---|
| Northern Undead Asylum | SL 1–5 |
| Undead Burg → Parish (Bell 1) | SL 5–20 |
| Darkroot Garden & Basin | SL 20–35 |
| Lower Burg & The Depths | SL 15–30 |
| Blighttown → Quelaag (Bell 2) | SL 25–40 |
| Sen's Fortress → Iron Golem | SL 35–45 |
| Anor Londo → Ornstein & Smough | SL 45–60 |
| Painted World of Ariamis | SL 45–55 |
| The four Lord Souls | SL 45–65 |
| Artorias of the Abyss (DLC) | SL 60–80 |
| Kiln of the First Flame → Gwyn | SL 60–80 |
The Drake Sword is a crutch, and a good one — but it has fixed damage and never scales, so it falls off by mid-game. Around Sen's/Anor Londo, pivot to a weapon you'll actually reinforce.
Two-handing multiplies your Strength by 1.5. Plan weapon requirements around the two-handed number and you'll spend fewer levels meeting them — leaving more for Vitality.
By the Kiln, a comfortable solo Pyromancer looks roughly like: Vitality 40–50, Endurance 40, Attunement 12–16, weapon requirements met, and an Ascended Pyromancy Flame. That lands you around SL 80–120 — plenty for Gwyn on a first run.
Stay under 25% of max equip load for the fast roll, under 50% for the mid roll. Fat-rolling (over 50%) gets you killed. Havel's Ring buys the armor budget to sit comfortably at mid roll.
Pair this with the Full Progression tracker to see which zone you should be in for your level — and First Hours if you haven't set up the Drake Sword and Master Key run yet.
