Soulslike Series · Solo · Power-Stance Bleed
The one thing that makes DS2 click: level Adaptability so your rolls actually dodge. Then it's fast, aggressive dual-katana bleed — with power-stancing, the series' signature move.
Drangleic is a kingdom ruled by want. From the hub of Majula you hunt four Great Souls — from the Lost Sinner, the Old Iron King, the Duke's Dear Freja, and the Rotten. With all four, the Shrine of Winter opens to Drangleic Castle and the road to the Throne of Want, where you take the seat or walk away. Level Adaptability first or the whole run feels unfair. First Hours is the Adaptability-first survival start; Full Progression is the spoiler-structured walkthrough with every boss, Great Soul and missable; Leveling is the power-stance dual-katana bleed stat plan. Every tick saves on this device as you go.
Your dodge i-frames come from the Adaptability (ADP) stat, via Agility. A fresh character barely dodges anything and the game feels unfair — it's not you, it's low Agility. Level ADP early to ~96 Agility (11 i-frames), up to 105. Do this and DS2 transforms.
Start Swordsman (high Dexterity). Level Adaptability first. Grab a katana at No-Man's Wharf, then a second, and power-stance them (hold to two-hand → dual-wield moveset) to stack bleed. Use Life Gems to save Estus. Level up at the Emerald Herald in Majula. Bleed-infuse your katanas once you get the Dull Ember.
Light. Covers Majula and your first area only. For the full route + live checklist use the Full Progression tab; for the stat plan, Leveling.
Tally your opening hours as you go. Items marked ↔ shared also live on the Full Progression or Leveling trackers — tick them anywhere and they stay in sync.
Dark Souls II departs from the rest of the series in a few ways that trip up newcomers. Know these and it stops feeling janky.
To power-stance two weapons you need 1.5× the higher Strength and Dexterity requirement of the pair. For two katanas that's roughly 21+ Dexterity — a good early Dex goal.
Swordsman starts with the highest Dexterity, so you reach katana and power-stance requirements soonest. (Explorer is a fine balanced alternative with a torch and low soul level.)
Majula is your hub. The Emerald Herald levels you and upgrades your Estus; the merchants sell Life Gems and gear.
First boss of the Forest of Fallen Giants. Stay under it, dodge the arm slam (it rips off its own arm as a club in phase 2), and punish its legs.
A recurring knight. In his arena you can fire the ballista to one-shot him as he charges. Otherwise, circle-strafe his thrusts and punish. Grab and summon Lucatiel when you can — her questline starts near here. Forest of Fallen Giants (wiki)
Head to Heide's Tower and No-Man's Wharf for a katana, then the Lost Bastille for the first Great Soul. Switch to Full Progression for the spoiler route + checklist, and Leveling for the ADP → Dex plan.
Before any damage stat, level Adaptability to about 96 Agility (11 i-frames) — the breakpoints that matter are 92 / 96 / 99, with 105 as the soft cap. Agility ≈ ADP×0.75 + ATN×0.25, so ADP around 20 gets you to 96; push toward ~29 ADP for 105.
Adaptability to ~96 Agility, Vigor for HP, Endurance for stamina, Vitality to stay under 70% equip load (fast roll), then Dexterity to power-stance two katanas (~21+ DEX) and beyond for scaling. Bleed-infuse your katanas (Dull Ember → McDuff). First-run target: roughly SL 120–150.
Tick each breakpoint as you hit it. This checklist is DS2-specific and saves as you go.
DS2 splits HP, stamina and equip load across three different stats — don't confuse them.
| Stat | Priority | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptability | ★★★ | ~20 → 29 | Agility = dodge i-frames + status resist. 96 Agility (≈20 ADP) early; 105 (≈29 ADP) soft cap. |
| Dexterity | ★★★ | 21+ → 40 | Primary damage. ~21+ to power-stance two katanas; then toward 40 for scaling. |
| Vigor | ★★★ | ~20 → 40 | HP. Raise it steadily — DS2 hits hard and there's no fast HP soft cap to rush. |
| Endurance | ★★ | ~20–25 | Stamina for power-stance flurries and rolls. |
| Vitality | ★★ | as needed | Equip load — enough to stay under 70% for the fast roll with your armor. |
| Attunement | ★ (opt) | ~10 | A few points add a little Agility and a spell slot; otherwise skip. |
| Strength | ★ | weapon req | Only enough to meet the power-stance requirement of your katanas. |
You only gain rolling i-frames at set Agility thresholds — level to a breakpoint, then stop.
| Agility | Roll i-frames |
|---|---|
| 86 (base-ish) | ~8 (rough — feels bad) |
| 92 | 10 |
| 96 | 11 (the sweet spot) |
| 99 | 12 |
| 105 | 13 (soft cap — diminishing after) |
96 Agility (≈20 ADP) is the standard target for a first run; 105 if you want the smoothest dodges. Agility also improves how fast you use items (drinking Estus, throwing).
Rough SL bands to aim for as you progress. These mirror the area bands on the Full Progression tracker.
| Area | Soul Level |
|---|---|
| Forest → Heide's (Last Giant, Pursuer) | SL 1–30 |
| Bastille → Sinner's Rise (Lost Sinner) | SL 30–50 |
| Iron Keep (Old Iron King) / Freja | SL 40–70 |
| Black Gulch (the Rotten) | SL 45–70 |
| Drangleic → Throne (Nashandra) | SL 70–100 |
| DLC — The Lost Crowns | SL 80–120 |
DS2 also cares about Soul Memory (total souls ever earned) for matchmaking — if you plan to co-op with a friend, avoid over-farming past their range.
By the Throne a comfortable power-stance hunter looks roughly like: Adaptability ~29 (105 Agility), Vigor ~40, Endurance ~25, Vitality for a fast roll, and Dexterity ~40, with bleed-infused or innate-bleed katanas. That lands around SL 120–150 — plenty for Nashandra and the Fume Knight / Ivory King in the DLC.
Pair this with the Full Progression tracker to see which area fits your level (and where each Great Soul is), and First Hours for the Adaptability rule and power-stance setup.
