Bloodborne is not Dark Souls — there's no shield and no waiting. This is how to survive the first night: the aggressive Rally rhythm, gun-parry ripostes, and a setup that carries you to the early bosses.
Yharnam is a city drowning in the plague of blood, and the night of the Hunt is the only way through it. Wake in the clinic, take up a trick weapon in the Hunter's Dream, and cut a path toward the truth behind the blood. Kill Vicar Amelia and the way to the woods opens; kill Rom and the Blood Moon rises, transforming the world — then it's the Nightmare of Mensis, Mergo's Wet Nurse, and a final choice back in the Dream. First Hours is the spoiler-light survival start; Full Progression is the spoiler-structured walkthrough with every boss, NPC and missable; Leveling is the Quality stat plan. Every tick saves on this device as you go.
Pick Lone Survivor (most HP) and the Saw Cleaver. Combat rewards aggression: when you take a hit, that health goes orange — hit back fast to Rally it back. Your gun isn't for damage — shoot an enemy as they wind up to stagger them, then land a Visceral Attack. Stock Blood Vials and Quicksilver Bullets before every boss. Grab the Music Box for Gascoigne. Dodge, don't block.
Light. Covers the opening district and names a couple of early bosses only. For the full route + live checklist use the Full Progression tab; for the stat plan, Leveling.
Tally your first night as you go. Items marked ↔ shared also live on the Full Progression tracker — tick them in either place and both stay in sync.
If your reflexes are trained on Dark Souls, unlearn the shield. Bloodborne punishes turtling and rewards pressure.
When in doubt, step toward the enemy, not away. Bloodborne's dodges and Rally are built for a hunter who stays in the fight. Rally (wiki)
Origins are just starting stats — none are locked into a playstyle. Lone Survivor gives the highest starting HP of any class, the biggest survival cushion while you learn the Rally rhythm. (Military Veteran is a fine Strength-leaning alternative; Milquetoast is the most balanced.) Classes (wiki)
At the start you pick one of three trick weapons from the Hunter's Dream. The Saw Cleaver is the beginner's pick: fast, solid damage, and a serrated bonus against beasts — which is most of what you fight early. Its transformed form trades reach for the compact saw's speed. (Hunter Axe = slow, heavy, great crowd control; Threaded Cane = fast whip range.)
Lone Survivor starts with the Hunter Pistol — precise, great for parries. The Blunderbuss (Military Veteran's start) is easier to land parries with at close range. Either works; the pistol is the classic choice.
Running out of Blood Vials mid-area is the classic new-hunter death spiral. If you're low, warp to the Dream and farm a lantern's worth before pushing on.
Looms on the Great Bridge. Optional, but good practice. Stay under it, punish after its big overhead swings, and use molotovs (it's a beast — fire hurts).
The real first wall. Grab the Music Box from the little girl behind the gate first — using it mid-fight staggers him for free hits. In his final beast phase he gets fast; keep distance, bait a swing, and Rally back any chip damage. Gascoigne (wiki)
After Gascoigne, Old Yharnam and the Blood-Starved Beast await. Switch to Full Progression for the spoiler route + checklist, and Leveling for the Quality stat plan.
Quality = Strength + Skill. Bring your core stats to ~25, push Vitality to 30 then 40, Endurance to 40, then grow Strength and Skill toward 50 (also the Visceral soft cap). Skip Bloodtinge and Arcane on a first run. Late game, your real damage comes from Blood Gems, not levels. Aim for roughly Lvl 70–100 by the finale.
Tick each breakpoint as you hit it. This checklist is Bloodborne-specific and saves as you go.
Bloodborne has no equip load and no Faith/Int — just six stats. For a Quality first run, four of them matter.
| Stat | Priority | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vitality | ★★★ | 30 → 40–50 | Raw HP. Soft caps at 30 and 50; aim 40–50 by endgame. |
| Endurance | ★★★ | up to 40 | Stamina for dodging/attacking. Hard soft cap at 40 (~160 stamina) — don't overinvest. |
| Strength | ★★ | 25 → 50 | Scales heavier trick weapons. Soft caps at 25 and 50. |
| Skill | ★★ | 25 → 50 | Scales fast weapons and is the only stat that boosts Visceral (riposte) damage. Soft caps 25 / 50. |
| Bloodtinge | — | leave at base | For gun/blood-weapon builds (Chikage, Evelyn). Skip on a Quality run. |
| Arcane | — | leave at base | For Hunter Tools and arcane weapons. Few arcane options early — skip for a first playthrough. |
Most trick weapons scale off both Strength and Skill, so a Quality build lets you swap weapons freely as you find them — no respec needed (there's no respec in Bloodborne anyway). It's the safest, most flexible first-run path.
Level to a soft cap, then move to the next stat — returns drop off sharply past these numbers.
| Stat | 1st soft cap | 2nd soft cap |
|---|---|---|
| Vitality | 30 | 50 |
| Endurance | 40 | — |
| Strength | 25 | 50 |
| Skill | 25 | 50 |
A clean order for a first run: core stats to ~25 → Vitality 30 → Endurance 40 → Vitality 40 → Strength & Skill toward 50, topping Vitality to 50 last if you want maximum safety.
Rough character-level bands to aim for. If you're inside the band, you're neither under- nor over-levelled. These mirror the area bands on the Full Progression tab.
| Area | Level |
|---|---|
| Central Yharnam → Gascoigne | Lvl 4–12 |
| Old Yharnam → Blood-Starved Beast | Lvl 15–25 |
| Cathedral Ward → Vicar Amelia | Lvl 20–30 |
| Forbidden Woods → Shadows | Lvl 30–40 |
| Byrgenwerth → Rom | Lvl 35–45 |
| Yahar'gul → The One Reborn | Lvl 40–50 |
| Nightmare of Mensis → Micolash | Lvl 45–55 |
| Mergo's Wet Nurse → Gehrman | Lvl 55–70 |
| The Old Hunters (Ludwig → Kos) | Lvl 50–80 |
Leveling stats matters, but in Bloodborne your weapon +level and Blood Gems drive most of your damage.
A single Blood Rock takes a weapon to +10; a fistful of good gems can double your effective damage. If a boss feels tanky, check your weapon level and gems before dumping Echoes into stats.
By the finale and the Old Hunters DLC, a comfortable Quality hunter looks roughly like: Vitality 40–50, Endurance 40, Strength and Skill in the 30–50 range, a +10 weapon, and strong Blood Gems. That lands you around Lvl 70–100 — plenty for Gehrman, the Moon Presence, and the Orphan of Kos.
Pair this with the Full Progression tracker to see which area fits your level, and First Hours if you're still learning the Rally + gun-parry rhythm.
